Description

The Church of the Santissima Annunziata, located in the centre of the hamlet of San Lazzaro, is one of Agerola’s principal places of worship. It stands on the site of an ancient church dedicated to Saint Lazarus and preserves an important historical, artistic and religious heritage.

The interior, divided into three naves, is enriched by elegant altars, the evocative statue of the Dead Christ, works of art from the ancient Convent of Cospiti, and the precious 14th-century double-sided marble cross, regarded as one of the church’s most important artistic treasures.

Thanks to its historical significance and its continuous role in religious life, the church remains a fundamental landmark for the spiritual, cultural and social life of the Agerola community.

The church preserves a rare 14th-century double-sided marble cross, originally from the ancient Convent of Cospiti, one of the most valuable works in Agerola’s artistic heritage. For many years, a small shrine containing a wooden cross stood at the foot of the bell tower. Today, this cross is displayed on the high altar, bearing witness to the long history and many transformations of this sacred building over the centuries.
