Description

The Church of St Matthew the Apostle, situated in the heart of the hamlet of Bomerano, is one of Agerola’s principal religious and historical landmarks. Its origins date back to the 12th century, although the present building was rebuilt in 1580 following the destruction of the original church.

The interior houses a rich artistic heritage, including the striking wooden ceiling featuring Paolo De Maio’s painting of the Martyrdom of Saint Matthew, the altarpiece depicting the Madonna in Glory flanked by Saints Matthew and Andrew, and a precious 15th-century crucifix. To this day, the church remains at the heart of the religious and cultural life of the Bomerano community.
