Description

Of very ancient origin, the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto, locally known as Madonna ‘o Rito, houses a statue of Saint Francis of Assisi, to whom the annual feast celebrated on 4 October is dedicated. The celebration coincides with the traditional Chestnut and “Ndorze” Festival, during which boiled chestnuts and corn on the cob are enjoyed.

On the church’s single altar stands a beautiful polychrome terracotta sculpture, attributed—although with some uncertainty—to the school of Luca della Robbia.

In the past, the church was under the patronage of the family of Vito Antonio d’Acampora and is currently cared for by the Mascolo family heirs.

The building underwent extensive restoration following the damage caused by the 1980 Irpinia earthquake.
